Redcar, 27th February 2025 – The Redcar & Cleveland Liberal Democrat Group has reluctantly agreed to back the Labour-led Council’s proposed budget for 2025-26, despite strong reservations. This decision follows years of government cuts, which have strained local services and left the council with few options.

While critical of Labour’s management, the group believes supporting the budget is necessary to protect vital local services. With central government cuts totalling 27% since 2010 according to the LGA, the alternative—opposing the budget—could lead to worse consequences, including central government intervention, deeper cuts, and higher taxes.

Councillor Carole Morgan, leader of the Liberal Democrats, stated: “We must support this budget to prevent further harm to our communities. Without it, we risk even worse outcomes, including savage cuts to council services and potentially double digit council tax rises.” She also criticized the Conservative Party for failing to propose an alternative budget, despite voting against the proposed budget, showing a lack of constructive opposition.

The Liberal Democrats emphasized their commitment to advocating for fairer funding and working to secure sustainable local government resources to protect essential services.
